London,
20 April 2009: "Dependency
- The Silent Bonds" - first EEDACC initiative for Eastern Europe
immigrants in London![]() Eastern Europe Dependency and Cure Centre in London is launching from 20th April 2009 an educational preventive initiative: "Dependency - The Silent Bonds", DSB. The DSB Initiative is attuned closely to the field of social problems associated with recent Eastern Europe immigration to the UK. The DSB Initiative is addressed primarily at young Polish people who came to Britain after Polish accession to the European Union. It is not easy for these Poles to live so far from the people and places they know. They experience difficulties in coping with stress and in managing the cultural differences of everyday life; they often feeling lonely and lost, and try to find their own way in difficult circumstances; they are a vulnerable group and have high risk of drug dependency. In view of the widespread availability and easy access to drugs in the UK (cf. www.polonia.wp.pl), drugs become regarded as an acceptable remedy for stress (cf. www.wiadomosci.onet.pl). Krystyna Walewska-Huseynov is facing this challenge in support of the Polish and British community, using her own professional knowledge and experience. As from today, and thanks to Psychological Support Centre and Caspian Resources Consulting in London, EEDACC is starting its Initiative "Dependency - The Silent Bonds" an educational and preventive project promoted by the slogan: "No Drugs | No Stress" AIMS: * promote among young Polish emigrants in London an awareness of how stress can lead to drug taking. Explain how quietly and deceptively drug dependency can get into daily life and become the main problem; * distribute among the young anti-dependency strategies that benefit their mental and emotional health, alleviate stress, and prevent the escalation into violent crime, rape and suicide. METHODS: * free lectures for Polish teaching staff in the Polish educational institutions; * distribution of free leaflets on the prevention of drug dependency to Polish cultural centres in London; * weekly antidrug advice sessions in Ealing; * confidential e-mailing service on how to cope with stress. |
